Christmas is a special time of the year, and for many it is seen as “a magical time of the year”. For many people Christmas is a time that is filled with sentimental memories and traditions, where we find joy and a sense of comfort in the traditional wrappings of Christmas. However it is soon over, the parties are over, the decorations are packed away and the presents are no longer novelties. The excitement and the joy are temporary and the period after Christmas can often seem quite an anticlimax.This is because our Christmas and focus of our celebrations are on the trimmings of Christmas. We need to be reminded of the true meaning of Christmas, which is actually made up of two words: Christ (the person of God’s Son and Saviour) and mass (celebration or festival). What our society and many of us have done in removing Christ from Christmas, is to leave ourselves with a celebration or festival that has no focus or meaning.
In order to truly celebrate Christmas we need to focus our celebrations on Christ. It is only in realising and accepting that Jesus was born to be our “Saviour, who is Christ the Lord”. It is only through the person of Christ that we can truly know the joy and peace of Christmas, because He is the only one who can save us from our sin and bring us into a relationship with God as our Heavenly Father.
May you, your families and our society truly know the blessing of Christ’s birth this Christmastime. May each one of us experience the joy and peace of the Christmas message through knowing Christ personally as our Saviour. Also as we enter into a New Year, may each of you know the Lord’s leading, care and confidence for the prospect of new opportunities.
